Young Nigerian man wins best teacher award in Lagos, gets N20,000 reward

Social media users have reacted to news of a young teacher who was given only N20,000 after emerging as the best teacher in Lagos.

Mr. Adekoya Raheem, a teacher at Sanya Senior Grammar School Ijeshatedo Surulere, Lagos impressed with his work dedication, earning him the award of the best teacher in school.

However, his excellence and passion for imparting knowledge was deemed to be worth a paltry N20,000, much to the displeasure of many netizens.

It is too small

Many netizens felt the N20,000 reward was not enough incentive for Mr. Raheem to continue to give his best in grooming the next generation.

Others believe that entertainers and reality TV stars get millions of Naira in endorsement, but teachers only get meagre amounts as compensation for their labour.

Action for Change and Empowerment, an organisation affiliated with the government, offered Mr. Raheem the cash prize for his meritorious service.

In a Facebook post, Mr. Adekoya Raheem shared a picture of himself holding the cheque issued to him and another photo of himself in the classroom.

“In lofty recognition of outstanding performances, excellence contributions, commitment and dedication to service as an outstanding educator in education 2022. Presented to ADEKOYA ABDULRAHEEM TIJANI (Sanya senior grammar school Ijeshatedo Surulere Lagos). Alhamdullilai. I dedicated this to my teachers, especially my darling mother,” he said.
