New Naira Notes: Violence erupts at ATMs as Nigerians scramble to withdraw cash before deadline

Despite the extension of the deadline for the swap of old 200, 500 and 1000 notes, there has been a persistent struggle for the new naira notes at various banks.

In a video posted on Instagram by mufasatundeednut, a number of sweating men pushed against each other just to get to the ATM first. In the end, no one seemed to succeed in getting through to it.

To make things worse, the charges for getting cash via POS machines have skyrocketed. Reports have it that some service providers charge up to 100 naira per 1000 naira withdrawal.

Bank officials, PoS operators extorting Nigerians in search of new naira notes

Meanwhile, if not for the intervention of passersby, Quadri Adejumo would have been involved in a physical combat with a PoS operator in Ibadan, capital of Oyo state on Sunday, Jan. 29.

Instead of collecting N100 interest for the sum of N5,000 he intended to withdraw, the PoS operator requested for N300, in order to the newly designed naira notes. Soon, Quadri got involved in a verbal argument that was fast degenerating into fight with the operator.

The PoS operator told Battabox that she bought the redesigned new banknotes from bank officials at high rates, hence, the need to make additional income.
