Nigerian family rejects old naira notes as bride price due to CBN deadline

Certain transactions, including pre-wedding arrangements, have been impacted by the CBN’s January 31 deadline for the usage of old naira notes.

A family in Niger State’s Gbako local government area refused old N1,000 and N500 notes from a man who wanted to marry their daughter.

The suitor’s family visited the future in-laws with a specific amount of cash for the bride price and other expenses according to Daily Trust.

The girl’s family, however, refused the cash and requested fresh notes. This was due to the CBN mandate to take old notes out of circulation.

The family also stated that they did not have a bank account to deposit the funds.

Speaking on the development, a member of the suitor’s family explained:

“We took money to the family of the girl we want to marry. They called me on Sunday to come and take the old currency notes back pending when we have the new naira notes.”

“They said they don’t have anywhere to change the old notes. So, I want to take it to the bank pending when we get the new notes.”
