Reno Omokri, a former presidential aide and social media activist, has urged Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), to reduce the frequency of church activities in order to help the Nigerian currency appreciate against the US dollar.

Omokri made this suggestion on his Instagram page on Monday, February 5, 2024, in response to Pastor Adeboye’s call for more prayers to strengthen the Naira. Pastor Adeboye had said on Sunday, February 4, 2024, during a special service at the RCCG headquarters in Lagos, that Nigerians should pray harder for the Naira to rise again.

However, Omokri disagreed with the clergyman, saying that prayers alone cannot solve the economic woes of the country. He argued that the Naira is depreciating because of the high demand for foreign currencies, which is partly fueled by the frequent church activities that require members to travel abroad.

Omokri wrote: “Dear Pastor Adeboye, I love you with all my heart. But I respectfully disagree with you. Praying for the Naira will not work. The reason the Naira is falling is because we have more churches than factories. Every Sunday, we close our factories and open our churches. That way, we produce more prayers than products.”

He continued: “And as if that is not bad enough, we then use the little money we have to import goods from China and other countries. How can the Naira not fall? If you really want the Naira to rise, tell your members to shun ‘weather for two’ and use the money they would have spent on flights and hotels to build factories and employ people. That way, we will produce more and consume less. And the Naira will rise without prayers.”

Omokri also advised Pastor Adeboye to emulate the founder of Winners Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo, who he said has invested in education, agriculture, and industry, thereby creating jobs and wealth for Nigerians.

He wrote: “Look at Bishop Oyedepo. He has built more than 40 schools, a university, a hospital, and many other things. He has created thousands of jobs and reduced poverty. And he did not do it by praying for the Naira. He did it by being productive and innovative. That is what Nigeria needs. Not more prayers. But more action.”

Omokri’s post has generated mixed reactions from his followers, with some supporting his views and others criticizing him for disrespecting Pastor Adeboye. Some also accused him of being hypocritical, saying that he also travels abroad frequently and enjoys the benefits of foreign currencies.
