Bank customers lose N472 million to fraudsters in 3 months

  • A report made by the FITC has revealed that customers in banks have lost a whooping N472 million to fraudsters.
  • Adding up the reported and recorded cases, it was disclosed that there are 12,552 cases under review.
  • Fraud cases recorded in the first quarter of this year reduced from that of last year.

A report by the Financial Institution Training Centre (FITC) has revealed that customers in Nigerian banks have lost N472m to fraud in the first three months of 2023.

The FITC has several members of the Nigeria Bankers Committee where even the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation, and every licensed bank in the country are involved.

In a report that was disclosed by them, a total fraud case of 12,552 have been reported, recorded and are under review at the moment.

However, the report has shown a decline in losses compared to the customers who fell victim to fraud in the fourth quarter of 2022.

According to the FITC, the number of reported and recorded fraud cases, 12,552 from the first quarter of the year is lower than that of the first quarter of the year 2022 which was 14,609.

It was also revealed that this fraud carry out their ‘operations’ on POS, mobile network banks and so many other things, also following the trends.

Hackers steal money from over 1000 Nigerian bank customers via BVN-linked numbers

Meanwhile, over 1000 Nigerian bank customers suffered a severe financial attack due to the actions of now-apprehended hackers.

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has formally confirmed the apprehension of two suspects who are believed to be associated with a syndicate engaged in unauthorized access to over 1000 Nigerian bank customer accounts within the country.

The recently apprehended fraudsters illicitly obtained millions of nairas from customers by exploiting BVN-linked phone numbers.
