Young man fights through family struggles, secures $50,000 US college scholarship

A California teenager named Joshua Alvarado has recently achieved a remarkable feat by securing the Edison International College Scholarship.

As a senior at South Gate High School, Joshua aspired to relieve his mother, Irene Rodriguez, of the burden of his educational expenses. Having lost his father at a tender age, Joshua grew up under the care of his single mother, who tirelessly worked extra hours to support him and his four siblings.

Despite the hardships, Joshua’s determination and academic excellence have now paved the way for a brighter future as he embarks on his journey to college.

Young man secures $50,000 US college scholarship

During the career day at South Gate High School, Joshua Alvarado received an incredible surprise from Edison International, a utility company that supports young students in Southern California.

Among 30 students selected for this honor, Joshua was one of the lucky recipients to be awarded a $50,000 college scholarship. This substantial scholarship increase by Edison International aims to empower these students in pursuing their dreams in science, math, technology, and engineering (STEM) fields.

A spokesperson of Edison International, Diane Castro had this to say:

“Joshua is a representative of our well-deserving scholars, mostly from underrepresented communities. We want to give him the tools to continue to pursue STEM in college.”


Joshua bravely opened up about the difficult time his family went through when they lost his father at a young age. His father had been a primary provider for the family, making the loss even more challenging to cope with.

However, in the face of this tragedy, Joshua’s mother, Irene, took on the responsibility of being the sole breadwinner for the household. With determination and strength, she worked tirelessly to ensure that her children could continue their studies without the burden of financial worries.

The presence of Joshua’s mother and siblings during the scholarship award ceremony made the moment even more special. They had no idea about the surprise, so when Edison International announced the $50,000 college scholarship for Joshua, it was an emotional and tearful moment for all of them.

“The first thing I saw was I saw he had the check. I said, ‘oh my God yes.’ I can’t believe it. I knew he had applied for it. But when one sees its real, I felt a lot of emotions,” Irene Rodriguez said.

Joshua acknowledged his mother’s selflessness and hard work, which allowed him and his siblings to focus on their education and pursue their dreams.

“I think she’s an amazing woman for everything she does. Taking care of all five of us. All of us going to school, doing our own things and exploring our own interests and growing. But she’s there with us all the way,” Joshua said.

He added that he will attending Stanford University, United States to study Mechanical Engineering with the hope ofHe shared his plans of attending Stanford University in the United States, where he aims to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Joshua expressed his aspirations of working at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) at some point in the future.

Thanks to the generous financial aid provided by Edison International, Joshua now has an exceptional chance to further his education and make strides towards achieving his career goals.
